Harare sits at around 1,480 metres on the Zimbabwean Highveld, laid out with wide avenues that turn purple with jacaranda blossom in spring. The centre is compact, with a national gallery, gardens and markets, and rock-strewn hills a short drive out.

The National Botanic Garden, the Harare Gardens in the centre, and Chapungu Sculpture Park, which showcases Zimbabwean stone sculpture.
Domboshava and Ngomakurira, with their balancing rocks, San rock art and views, are about 30 to 40 km north.
Most visitors need a visa, available on arrival or online, and payment is largely in US dollars. Check current travel advice, use arranged transport rather than hailing on the street, and avoid political gatherings.
Many travellers pass through en route to Victoria Falls or the eastern highlands. A day or two covers the gallery, gardens and a market.
September and October bring the jacaranda and flamboyant bloom that the city is known for.
There is no visitor-oriented public transport. Hotels and tour operators arrange cars and drivers.
